Nathan Evans Fox Heirloom

Nathan Evans Fox grew up in rural North Carolina, trained as a hospital chaplain, and then, after his father died and his own child was born, walked away from the work to make music full-time. Heirloom is the record that came out of that doorway. The banjo does most of the talking, but never as a costume: he bows it, mutes it, plays it percussively, using it to carry songs about shuttered mills, a faith coming apart at the seams, and the open question of whether you are obliged to hand your family's shame down to the next generation. He calls the result "comrade country," and the phrase fits — a music that refuses both the impulse to climb above your raising and the demand to be ashamed of it.
