The duo is an unlikely pairing on paper: Luiza Monteiro, a singer and soap-opera actress born in Rio and now living in Austria, and Dustin Braun, a German producer with a studio habit. Their self-titled debut, out on the reliably curatorial Mr Bongo, gathers eleven songs that sit somewhere between sixties samba, psychedelic disco, and a strain of MPB balladry that has mostly slipped out of circulation. What keeps it from being a period exercise is Braun's studio hand—the way a groove will suddenly tilt, or a vocal will be doubled and smeared until it reads less like nostalgia than like memory. Monteiro sings sweetly and precisely, but there's ballast under the sweetness. You can hear the reference points—Céu, Gal Costa, a little Altin Gün—without the record ever sounding like homework. It is the day's most surprising arrival, and my pick.

Last October, the Scottish pianist recorded The Shieling with his trio in a remote cottage on North Uist, in the Outer Hebrides, and the record went to number one on the UK jazz chart. This companion EP came out of the same room—six pieces cut over five January days, the trio gathered around an upright piano, including a couple of alternate takes that wander somewhere the album versions didn't. The folk melodies McCreadie leans on come through with more space around them, David Bowden's bass and Stephen Henderson's drums shading rather than filling. A "shieling," for the record, is the hut a shepherd used on high summer pasture, and the music keeps that quality of a small structure standing out in open weather. It asks for a quiet room. Zuraitis won the Grammy for best jazz vocal album in 2024, and she has used the goodwill to make something considerably more ambitious than a follow-up. the devil i knew is a breakup record built as a cycle in five movements—The Mirror, The Martyr, The Malediction, The Reckoning, The Requiem—each stitched to the next with lines borrowed from Dorothy Parker, Emily Dickinson, and Edna St. Vincent Millay. Donny McCaslin turns up on saxophone. The scale occasionally works against it; a suite this long asks a lot of a single sitting, and the orchestral swells sometimes say more than the songs underneath them need. But the writing is sharp, and the literary scaffolding earns its keep more often than not. Think of it less as a jazz album than as a contemporary song cycle that happens to swing. The Flute Concerto that opens this program dates to 1969, written not long after Williams first heard a Japanese shakuhachi, and you can catch the instrument's breathy bend in the solo line. It's a useful reminder that the man had a concert-hall life long before the movies. The opener, "G.O.D. And The Broken Ribs," sets the creation story to a strut and gets straight to the negotiation—two people in Eden, working out what's for dinner. That's the record in miniature: fuzz-blown riffs, a minimum of decorum, and a lyric doing more work than the racket lets on. The title is grimmer than it sounds: a "Frozen Charlotte" is a Victorian porcelain doll named for a ballad about a girl who froze to death rather than cover up a party dress. White has always liked that kind of dark Americana, and here he lets the guitars carry it. Nobody is making classic rock anymore, the argument goes, except him—and on this evidence, it's hard to name a rival. 承接二〇二四年的《No Name》，Jack White 又交一張毛刺滿身、riff 先行的車庫搖滾，比上一張更不講體面。開場曲〈G.O.D. Andr, a Taipei songwriter whose debut earned a Golden Melody nomination for best new artist, works a seam of alternative R&B threaded with bedroom pop and field-recorded noise, in Mandarin and English by turns. SKIN is a six-track EP made over a year with the producer Han Li-kang, with the Korean musician Whys Young guesting on one cut. "I turned every song into a monster," she has said, and there's an edge to these arrangements the first record kept smoother. At the release shows, the audience is asked to sit on the floor in paper-bag masks—an image that suits music this interior.
