Sixteen years have passed since In Search of Black Judas, the first and until now only solo album from the bassist who anchored Bad Brains. That band played hardcore faster than almost anyone thought music could be played; this record does the opposite, slowing the pulse until it dissolves into reverb. Nine of its eleven tracks are new, but the two that aren't tell the story: "Re-Ignition II," and a "Rights Dub" that takes an old Bad Brains anthem and lets the air out of it. The guest list reads like a downtown jazz reunion — John Medeski on organ, Karl Berger on vibes, the late Jack DeJohnette at the kit. Jenifer calls the album The Weather Channel because he means for it to run in the background, unwatched, and somehow that modesty is the most punk thing about it.

Lenny Kaye compiled Nuggets in 1972, the anthology that more or less coined the phrase "garage rock," and he has played guitar behind Patti Smith for half a century. At seventy-nine, he has finally made a record of his own — twelve songs written in scattered moments over many years. The lovely miscalculation at its center is Matthew Shipp, a free-jazz pianist you would never expect to find on a folk-rock album, sitting in as though he had always belonged there. Smith turns up to co-write "Solstice." Kaye has said that on the eve of the release he felt like a new artist, which is a strange and touching thing to hear from someone who has been on stage longer than most listeners have been alive.

Roberto Carlos Lange, who records as Helado Negro, met the guitarist Fabi Reyna — Reyna Tropical, and a touring member of Sleater-Kinney — in North Carolina in the summer of 2024. A brief studio visit turned into a three-day sleepover, and this nine-song album, sung entirely in Spanish, has the unhurried warmth of people who like each other's company. It hangs between ambient drift and gentle rhythm, never in a rush to resolve. Psychic Hotline, the label run by Sylvan Esso, is exactly the kind of small, hand-tended operation such a record needs.

The Balinese pianist who astonished audiences as a child is now eight albums deep, and old enough to shrug off the word "prodigy." Seven originals drawn from the rhythms of home sit beside three standards, and the set closes, unexpectedly, on the hymn "How Great Thou Art" — a plain gesture of faith after all the invention. Lisa Fischer and saxophonist Jaleel Shaw lend their weight.

For their fourth album the Cuban mambo orchestra left Havana for the first time, recording live to tape at Daptone's Penrose studio under Gabriel Roth. The playing still swings hard, but the songs pull in the other direction. Two new singers, Mariam Elhajli and Carolina Oliveros of Combo Chimbita, inherit the fire of Celia Cruz and La Lupe and spend it on quieter subjects — displacement, upheaval, the weight an immigrant carries. A dance band, in other words, that has learned to sound homesick without ever missing a step.

Mock Media — Rat Bastard

An art-punk quintet from the interior of British Columbia, signed to Mac DeMarco's label, Mock Media refuse to sit still inside any one genre. Their press notes name-check The Cars, the Ramones, Bad Brains, XTC and Fleetwood Mac, which is either a list of influences or a dare. The singer, Evan Aasen, describes the title track as a Cars-shaped song to play while working on rusty metal with the radio on, and says it is about the little rat bastard everyone keeps somewhere inside. There is real relief in a band this unbothered by importance.

The Leeds producer's second album pushes her jungle further toward guitars and alternative rock, with fuller vocal harmonies and more duets than before. James Ford and Ethan P. Flynn help at the desk; Jorja Smith and Sampha stop by. The title doubles as a self-description — for Nia Archives, "junglist" is less a genre than a way of naming who she is.
