Hannah Marks — Feed the Fire

Marks is a bassist, and her second album has the confidence of someone who has stopped explaining herself. The title track builds the way a good argument does, patiently, the alto saxophone and Lex Korten's piano circling a small idea until it catches. Jason Moran produced, and you can hear his fingerprints in how much air the quartet is allowed — nobody rushes, nobody crowds. Scattered through the nine tunes are conversations with Geri Allen, less homage than back-and-forth, Marks answering phrases Allen might have played and then wandering somewhere Allen wouldn't have. "Mushi Mushi" is where the record loosens its collar. It is the kind of straight-ahead session that rewards the second listen more than the first, which is its own quiet form of ambition.
