Stephen Hough — Stephen Hough's Piano Postcards
- Genre類型
- Classical / Solo Piano
- Label廠牌
- Hyperion
- Format介質
- CD / Vinyl / Streaming
A knight of the realm sits down and plays "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" as though it were Schubert. That is the opening move of Piano Postcards, out Friday on Hyperion: Stephen Hough's own Mary Poppins suite, then twenty-six souvenirs of a touring life. A Mexican serenade. Kosaku Yamada's "Aka tombo." A 1933 Taiwanese melody by Deng Yu-hsien that this Taipei desk received like mail from home. Rachmaninoff's bumblebee, Granados, and first recordings of the Frozen, Mulan, and Coco arrangements, which means the Hyperion catalogue now contains "Let It Go" and somewhere an archivist is quietly adjusting. Hough plays none of it with irony. Miniatures reward the qualities that made his reputation, voicing and timing and tact, and he treats every postcard as though it earned its stamp.

Anne Sofie von Otter has been circling this repertoire since her Weill records of the nineties; Berlin! Berlin! Berlin!, with the salon orchestra of the Komische Oper Berlin under Adam Benzwi, finally gives it a full evening. The subtitle—Kabarett und Exil—is the program: nineteen songs from the twenties through the forties, in which a gorilla keeps a villa at the zoo, Marlene Dietrich gets a favourite back, and Peter Kreuder's "Musik! Musik! Musik!" may or may not have seeded the theme from The Muppet Show. Then the other half: Hanns Eisler's Hollywood Songbook, written by a man watching Germany from a California he never quite believed in, and numbers from Weill's Berlin Requiem. Benzwi's band favours salon smokiness over concert-hall polish, which is the right call. SACD, on BIS.
Sergio Azzolini & L'Onda Armonica — Vivaldi: Concerti per fagotto VI
- Genre類型
- Classical / Baroque / Bassoon Concerto
- Label廠牌
- naïve
- Format介質
- CD / Hi-Res / Streaming
Some projects outlast their own news cycle. Sergio Azzolini began recording Vivaldi's bassoon concertos for naïve's Vivaldi Edition in 2010; sixteen years and six volumes later, the job is done. Vivaldi wrote thirty-nine of them—more concertos than for any instrument except the violin, a lopsided affection nobody has fully explained—and this final installment gathers the four that had never been recorded complete, among them RV 501, "La Notte." Ending a sixteen-year survey with a concerto called "Night" is the kind of programming you couldn't script. Azzolini plays a period bassoon with a growl in the low register and a singer's line above it, and L'Onda Armonica keeps the accompaniment conversational rather than reverent. Sixteen years, six volumes, thirty-nine concertos. Done.

Smirk is the Los Angeles one-man operation of Nick Vicario, and its first two records moved at the speed of a man double-parked. Speculative Fiction, his third, pulls over. The tempos settle into a power-pop stride—reviewers are reaching for Big Star, the Paul Collins Beat, the Exploding Hearts—while the recording keeps its Guided by Voices economy: close walls, dry drums, no varnish. The subject is the suburbs, approached from the unfashionable direction—not escaping them but moving back, older, with your records and your regrets in the same boxes. The tracklist does its own talking: "I Shall Be Released," which is not the Dylan song; "Crime Pays"; and "Shit Song," which is better than several songs here with humbler titles. Members of Hotline TNT fill out the live band, and Ceremony's Ross Farrar stops by.

Movie, from Washington, D.C.'s Lifted, is billed as a film shot with microphones. The billing survives the listen. Andrew Field-Pickering (Max D) and Matt Papich (Co La) collage field recordings, dub, and jazz on CDJs in real time, the way other people improvise on horns. Their named references are Robert Altman and Apichatpong Weerasethakul, directors who treat sound as geography, and the record honours both: dialogue drifts in and out of frame, Papich audibly ordering a sandwich, Field-Pickering browsing a grocery store, life happening at its own pace just off-screen. More eaze opens the album on pedal steel, slowed and pitched upward like a studio logo materializing; Duncan Moore's bagpipes drone through "Melts Very Nasty"; Dustin Wong's guitar dances the end credits with drummer Jeremy Hyman. It came out June 5. I missed it; June's ambient roundup didn't.

The alias unpacks to The International Billionaire's Secret Love Child. Set that aside. After two quietly admired albums on sferic and five years of self-releases, the Leipzig producer returns to label life on Glasgow's co:clear: eight tracks of high-fidelity digital haze, actual songs surfacing for a verse and dissolving again. The titles carry the humour the sound withholds ("Resting Bitch Face"). After midnight the eight tracks behave like one long one, and that appears to be the design.
