Bill MacKay and Cooper Crain are two Chicago lifers — a guitarist and a synthesist, respectively — and their second duo record is, on paper, a modest thing: eight tracks, two players, no overdub army. What makes it worth your afternoon is the method. Stash was committed to half-inch eight-track tape at Electrical Audio, then mixed down to two-track tape, with not a single digital step anywhere in the chain. You can hear the decision. The music has a grain to it — a slight, breathing friction that has nothing to do with nostalgia filters and everything to do with two people refusing to tidy each other up. They improvise into shape and let the takes stand. Olson has spent a decade as Los Angeles's reliable man in the wings — the architect behind L.A. Takedown's "Baywatch krautrock," a sideman the city's experimental and folk circuits both keep on speed-dial. Songs Album II, his Country Thyme debut and his first batch of plain songs-for-singing in ten years, is what happens when the accompanist finally walks to the center of the stage. The ten tracks slip between satire, confession and something stranger, but the melodies are sweet in a considered, faintly classical way — pop that has clearly been thought about. There's a particular freedom here, the kind available only to someone who has spent years serving other people's songs and arrives at his own without the usual vanity attached. 洛杉磯幕後的一位老手——L.A. Clark is a Bristol songwriter, a member of the art-rock quartet The Scuttlers, lately back from the road with Naima Bock and Sorry. For his solo debut he has coined a word for what he does — "musical jank" — which sounds like an excuse and turns out to be a discipline. The eleven songs weld deliberate performance imperfections to the homespun indie-guitar manner of the 1980s (the Go-Betweens are the obvious ancestor), then bolt the whole thing onto the bones of English folk and Delta blues. It plays loose, almost careless, until you notice that every wobble is placed.
