Daniel Lanois — Belladonna Nocturne

Lanois is the man whose name tends to live on the backs of other people's records — The Joshua Tree, Dylan's Time Out of Mind, the ambient experiments with Eno, Emmylou Harris's Wrecking Ball. Here he puts down the tools he lends to everyone else and returns to his own dialect: a nocturnal companion to his 2005 instrumental Belladonna. Fourteen originals, built, by his account, by keeping the studio's accidents and patiently sanding them into songs — which is the hard part of ambient music stated plainly, the trick of making the accidental sound inevitable. Brian Blade drums; Emmylou Harris and Daryl Johnson drift through. Ambient so often thins into wallpaper; Lanois's never does. It has temperature, humidity, a specific room. Today's pick, and the one I'd cue first. The Vampires — Skydancer

This Sydney quartet has been together a full twenty years now, and Skydancer is their eighth. The bones are still four players — Jeremy Rose on saxes and bass clarinet, Nick Garbett on trumpet, Noel Mason on bass, Alex Masso on drums — but they've layered the acoustic frame with overdubs and synthesizers until it opens into something roomier. Following the ARIA-winning Nightjar (2023, with The Necks' Chris Abrahams), the rhythm here sits further back, the groove stickier. Australian jazz has the great virtue of never rushing to prove its chops; the Vampires make a place audible instead, the particular openness and light of a Southern Hemisphere coastline. The cover, by Rose's old schoolmate Mia Taninaka, reaches for Egyptian myth. 組合的名字就是一張配方表：「straight-ahead」的正統爵士，加上 808 鼓機的低音，加上集體即興。三個人的交情可以追到大學時代——鍵盤手 Sam Barsh 和鼓手 Mark Guiliana 當年在同一支學生樂團，小號手 Keyon Harrold 後來在紐澤西一場演出裡 sit in 進來，就再沒走。Barsh 的另一份履歷更唬人：Kendrick Lamar 的《To Pimp a Butterfly》、Anderson .Paak 的《Malibu》、Kanye West 的《Donda》都有他。把嘻哈製作裡的 808 拽進 acoustic 爵士，這點子本身不新鮮，真正難的是讓鼓機和真鼓不打架、不互相搶拍。而 Mark Guiliana 恰恰是當今最懂得跟電子聲響共處的鼓手之一——這事交給他，讓人放心。機器和人各說各話，最後聊到了一塊。

波士頓二人組 Lauren Crosser 與 Rick Martel 的處女作，他們給自己的聲音起了個準確又好笑的名字——「地牢夢囈流行（dungeon dream pop）」。做法很樸素：Lauren 從波士頓開車去 Rick 在新罕布夏的家庭錄音室，把吉他想法一段段錄下來。整張是 4-track 卡帶的質感：低保真、混響重、陰鬱，shoegaze 的聲牆裡滲著 goth 和 industrial 的潮氣。處女作難免不夠整飭，幾首之間也未必嚴絲合縫，但這種粗糲恰恰是它最迷人的地方——它不像在表演憂鬱，更像憂鬱本身被隨手錄了下來，沒來得及修飾。用卡帶發行，很對路。

Francesco Tristano — Bach: The 6 French Suites

Francesco Tristano 是個奇怪的存在：這位盧森堡鋼琴家能在柏林的俱樂部彈 techno，也能正襟危坐彈巴赫，而且兩邊都不是玩票。他的巴赫系列已經走過好幾站——帕蒂塔（2024）、英國組曲（2025）、觸技曲（2025），這次輪到六首法國組曲。用現代鋼琴彈巴赫的鍵盤音樂總會引來「該不該用鋼琴」的爭議，但 Tristano 的觸鍵有種電子樂人特有的節奏感：顆粒清楚，分句俐落，不濫用踏板去糊出「古典味」。法國組曲本就輕盈、舞曲性強，交到他這雙「懂律動」的手裡，反而跳了起來。一個能在俱樂部彈 techno 的人來彈巴赫的舞曲，聽上去是衝突，其實是知音。

Trio Boccherini — Conversations à trois

專輯名取自一個舊稱：早期法國人管絃樂三重奏叫「三人對話（conversations à trois）」，因為那是一個把交談本身當成藝術的年代。這張正對應著這個題目——二十世紀上半葉法國與比利時的弦樂三重奏：Jean Cras（一位當過海軍軍官的布列塔尼作曲家，作品裡能聽見北非的影子，也有巴赫與巴托克的回聲）、Eugène Ysaÿe 的《Le Chimay》、Jean Françaix 那首又輕盈又狡黠的三重奏，外加一首 Debussy《月光》的弦樂改編。三件弦樂的妙處正在這裡：沒有鋼琴坐鎮當裁判，三個聲部真的在你來我往地交談，誰也不壓誰。Trio Boccherini（Suyeon Kang、Vicki Powell、Paolo Bonomini）繼匈牙利弦樂三重奏專輯之後的第二張。今天的古典湊齊了——一張彈鍵盤，一張玩對話。
