Five records made indoors this week — and the rooms turn out to be occupied.

For four albums the New York pianist worked the melodic edge of post-bop, leaning on a door; on his fifth he simply climbs out the window. Lucid assembles a formidable room — Immanuel Wilkins on alto, Kalia Vandever on trombone, Thomas Morgan on bass, Lesley Mok on drums — but it isn't a record about firepower. It's about a particular state of attention: rather than play the notes his training expects, Thomas prods at the keys for the sounds they actually make, and coaxes the others into prodding alongside him. The improvising has the loose, associative logic of half-sleep, yet nothing in it is blurred. Bandcamp made it album of the day, and it's the first thing I'd put on this morning, loud.

Most side projects spend their energy distancing themselves from the mothership; plum, the solo debut from The Marías' drummer and producer, does something smarter by refusing to flee. It keeps the band's seductive warmth and folds it into one person's room. Across nine songs and thirty-five minutes — warm synthesizers, tightened drums, a vocal pressed close to the ear — Conway never hurries the hypnosis, but he knows when to loosen his grip and let a passage drift off on its own. Clash gave it an eight. There's no thesis to prove here, only the harder ambition of recording what a single late-lit room actually feels like, which turns out to be its own kind of candor. It comes on translucent violet and cream-white vinyl.

Micha Acher, of The Notwist, has taken his own older material apart and rewritten it as chamber music, and the title is no metaphor: you recognize the contour of these melodies, but they've been moved into a quiet, faintly cold light where something is subtly off. Performed by Theresa Loibl, Timm Kornelius, Markus Rom, Simon Popp and Acher himself, it isn't a showy set of arrangements but an exercise in slowing the familiar down, hollowing it out, leaving room for the echo. The Germans have a particular gift for this domestic uncanny — no jump scares, just the recognition of a room and the news that someone has been in it all along. This is the day's classical entry, the half that hides in the gaps.

The Hull four-piece's fourth album pulls its post-punk inward, trading some of the old velocity for folklore, myth and geography — the things bolted to a place. The titles give the game away: "Wild Grasses," "The Dollywaggon," "Morning Fog," half of Northern England's mist and scrub gathered into a tracklist. The stated theme is escape and journey, but the more you listen the more it sounds like a band that never left, only dug up the local legends to tell them again. They remain doggedly DIY, rooted in community, releasing through EMI North's Northern imprint Launchpad+. The drive is intact; this time it's aimed at home.
Richard Strauss — Intermezzo
- Genre類型
- Opera / Late-Romantic
- Label
- Naxos
- Format介質
- 2 CD / Hi-Res / Streaming
- Released發行
- 2026-06-12
Strauss called it "a bourgeois comedy with symphonic interludes," and the description is honest: Intermezzo is a semi-autobiographical opera built around a marital misunderstanding — a misdirected letter that nearly dismantles a household. It is domestic to the point that he wrote himself into it and let the joke be on him. Donald Runnicles conducts the Deutsche Oper Berlin, with Philipp Jekal and Maria Bengtsson, and the recording's virtue is its refusal to reach for the cosmic blare of Ein Heldenleben; it tracks the cadence of speech instead, so the quarrels sound like quarrels and the reconciliations like reconciliations. Opera about marriage is nothing new; opera this domestic without turning trivial is the rare trick.
