The most disarming debut of the week comes from a Chicago multi-hyphenate of Mexican and Indian descent, and it lasts all of twenty-four minutes. Sparklmami sings in Spanish and English, often in the same breath, over a band steeped in seventies Brazilian jazz and the boleros that filled her childhood home. Cut mostly live, in single takes, with Nico Segal among the players, the record behaves less like a song cycle than like a frequency you keep half-tuning into — breathy, looping, lit from within. It doesn't explain memory so much as let it glow in the corner of the room. Short, dense, and the first thing I'd play today.

On the thirteenth of February, Maxwell Allison — co-founder of Hausu Mountain — sat down at home with a single Roland SP-404 MKII and recorded the whole thing in one pass, no overdubs. The method is the point. Across fifty-nine minutes the music slews from warp-speed glitch to glinting jazz-piano sketches to broad fields of ecstatic synthesis, and it never sounds like a man idly tapping pads; it sounds like an entire mood compressed into a sampler and allowed to leak back out.
