Daniel Monkman, the Anishinaabe musician behind Zoon, calls the sound "moccasin-gaze" — the wall-of-noise of shoegaze wrapped in Indigenous memory and tape hiss. This third album refuses to flinch from its subjects: heartbreak, relapse, racial trauma, the slow work of putting a self back together. The title comes from a school in East Selkirk, Manitoba, optimistically named, where Monkman, one of the only Native students, weathered racism with early-2000s pop radio piped through headphones as his single refuge. What's quietly devastating here is the reversal: he takes the thing he once hid inside and rebuilds it as armor. The lead single, "One Too Many Nights" (featuring Sam Jr.), already sands a wound down to something like light.
