Koreans reinventing pansori as post-punk; an American folk record quoting Fauré

The premise sounds like a dare: a seven-piece from Seoul, two singers short of a choir, building everything on bass and drums alone—no guitars, by design—while four vocalists trade the looping, narrative cadences of pansori, the centuries-old Korean storytelling song. New-wave synths streak in sideways. The melodies keep springing back up at the exact moment you expect them to land, which is exhausting in lesser hands and, here, delightful. Leenalchi have always been a fusion act, but Here Comes That Crow finds the sweet spot between whimsy and craft, the cartoonish and the rigorous. Brian Eno, of all people, is quoted in their bio insisting he has never heard anything quite like it. For once the cover quote feels earned rather than purchased.

The Danish quartet led by trumpeter Tomasz Dąbrowski and saxophonist Sven Dam Meinild closes its long-running Nature trilogy with a record built, improbably, on Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing's The Mushroom at the End of the World—the anthropologist's study of what manages to grow in ruined ground. Her notion of "temporal polyphony" becomes a working method here: compositions left deliberately porous, full of overlap and hesitation, the four players feeling out each next move rather than executing a chart. It is Nordic in the best sense—patient, uncluttered—without tipping into the chilly austerity the label usually implies. The pleasure is in watching a decision get made in real time, four ways at once.

After years of writing for small rooms, the pianist Helen Sung has finally scaled herself up to seventeen players, and the debut is a genuinely buoyant thing—a joyous celebration, as The Arts Desk put it, across twelve tracks and roughly fifty-two minutes. The big-band idiom invites bombast, and most contemporary attempts drown in it. Sung doesn't, because her instincts were formed somewhere between bebop and modern chamber writing; however thickly the brass is stacked, the skeleton stays visible underneath. Recommended, in particular, for anyone who has quietly decided that the big band is a museum form. It is not.

Garbus's third album for Orindal was recorded to quarter-inch tape at the home studio of her old friend Kyle Thomas, better known as King Tuff, and it sounds it: sparse, close, the kind of intimacy where you can hear the chair. The quiet coup is that she folds two Fauré pieces—"Clair de Lune," "Nocturne"—directly into the fabric of the record, treating the French Romantic not as homage but as raw material. The songs circle what it means to be a woman in her forties, and they do it without a gram of self-pity; what comes through instead is the lightness that arrives once a thing has finally been said plainly. Bandcamp made it an Album of the Day, rightly.

An improvising duo's debut, named flatly for the city that produced it, moving across eight pieces from grabby fiddle-and-electronics ambient jams to passages of jarring, shard-glass collage. The cleverest gesture isn't sonic but structural: the record refuses a fixed order. The digital edition is sequenced at random; the vinyl carries no sequence at all. You're left to find your own way in and out, the way you would in an unfamiliar city—following the locals, letting the backdrop reveal itself. This is not experimental music for the background. It wants you to get a little lost on purpose.

This New York trio learned its three-part harmony the hard way, busking in subway stations, which is why the blend sounds lived-in rather than studio-assembled—voices that have actually spent years a few inches from one another. The instrumentation is half-homemade, the storytelling frankly theatrical, the register somewhere between folk, chamber pop, and musical theater. The title comes from The Tempest: Prospero's vow to abjure "this rough magic." It's a record about laying a trick down, about leaving, and the harmonies are nearly too lovely—except the narratives keep a hand on the wheel, and never let the sweetness run off with it.
