Two of the most decorated names in contemporary jazz finally meet with nothing between them: one trumpet, one guitar, nine pieces, four written by each and a last one shared. Recorded at Sear Sound, the album is most striking for what Akinmusire does to his own sound — for the first time on record he runs the trumpet through effects pedals, so that a tone famous for its clarity begins to fog and lengthen and hesitate. Halvorson, whose specialty has always been letting a chord buckle under itself, meets him not by filling the space but by catching the air he leaves behind. The absence of a rhythm section turns out to be the point: with less to lean on, you can finally hear the two of them thinking.

A trombone is supposed to announce itself; Vandever would rather it dissolve. Across seven pieces she feeds the solo instrument through a bank of pedals, bending and layering its breath in real time until the brass becomes a slow-moving weather system, anchored by piano so spare it barely moves — the label's reference point is late-period Ryuichi Sakamoto, and for once the comparison earns its keep. None of this is display. It is subtraction: you settle in expecting a solo and instead hear an instrument patiently forgetting what it is. The Baltimore-and-Berlin quartet has always made its case through just intonation and interlocking rhythms wound tight enough to seal out daylight; vocals would have been a redundancy. This record breaks the rule — for the first time, on one of its twelve pieces, somebody sings. Guest bass clarinet and trombone widen the group's hard geometry, and a human warmth keeps leaking through the machined loops. The Quietus named it Album of the Week, and the difficulty is intact: this is still music that treats the listener as someone to be drawn in by degrees. But the reward at the center has changed. The Montréal five-piece's second album switches between French and English and never takes the expected turn; the chord changes are counter-intuitive, the dissonance deliberate, and somehow the thing still dances. Following 2023's Stay Safe!, the band improvised many of its hooks live in the studio, and you can hear the upside of catching lightning before there is time to tidy it — the songs have a nervy, unfinished electricity. No wave, noise rock and shoegaze get folded into a post-punk frame, mastered to a bright edge by Robin Schmidt, and the result is jittery, confrontational and weirdly adhesive. Six years after Blood, the cellist and singer returns with something closer to a rite than a record. Distorted guitars, choral swells and a dark electronic undertow move between devotional intensity and cinematic scale; co-produced with Jack Antonoff and Yves Rothman, with Sampha, Kamasi Washington and Kim Gordon among the guests, none of whom crowd the center, because the center is always Lu's voice — an instrument that keeps trading places with her cello. Across ten tracks, from "Reaper" to "Portrait Of A Lady On Fire," she maps the narrow path between shadow and release, and the multidisciplinary sprawl she is known for finally sounds like one continuous idea rather than several adjacent ones. On one side, Steve Reich's Different Trains, which splices the recorded speech of Holocaust survivors into a string quartet and lets the rhythm of the rails fall into step with the melody of a human voice. On the other, Pulsing by Bryce Dessner — the National's guitarist writing for four strings with a rock player's sense of momentum. The French quartet Quatuor Zaïde places the two side by side across thirty-six minutes, and the pairing draws out the buried line that runs from postwar trauma straight into contemporary rock. In choral programming the same handful of names tends to circulate forever; this album deliberately swaps them out. It gathers commissioned works by Reena Esmail, Jocelyn Hagen, Kile Smith and Shawn Okpebholo, alongside Shawn Kirchner's arrangement of "Sweet Rivers" — four living voices, none of them quite inside the inherited canon. Soundmirror captured it at Cristo Rey Church, and the sense of room, which is the whole game in a recording like this, is held intact under conductors Joshua Habermann and Nathan Salazar. The intention is right there in the title: to graft a few neglected roots and rivers back onto an American choral tradition that has long pretended they weren't there. The Japanese instrumental band led by the violinist Ayasa puts the violin where a singer would normally stand — one more instrument, on a day full of them, declining its job description, though here the refusal runs the opposite way. This short set collects two drama themes ("Our Fate," for BS-TBS, and "The weight of choice," for Nippon TV's AKIBA LOST), and its symphonic arrangements hold the emotional line without apology: the strings are bowed full, the drums hit square. It is not complicated, and amid an afternoon of records bent on subverting themselves it offers the contrarian pleasure of a melody allowed, simply, to be melodic. The limited edition arrives with a Blu-ray.
