Nathan Evans Fox grew up in rural North Carolina, trained as a hospital chaplain, and then, after his father died and his own child was born, walked away from the work to make music full-time. Heirloom is the record that came out of that doorway. The banjo does most of the talking, but never as a costume: he bows it, mutes it, plays it percussively, using it to carry songs about shuttered mills, a faith coming apart at the seams, and the open question of whether you are obliged to hand your family's shame down to the next generation. He calls the result "comrade country," and the phrase fits — a music that refuses both the impulse to climb above your raising and the demand to be ashamed of it. For his third Alpha recital, the Uzbek pianist builds a program around fire and descent, and then has the nerve to make the architecture the point rather than the fireworks. Liszt's "Dante" Sonata sits at the center — a single movement that walks the whole way down and most of the way back — and the recital ends on one of the genuinely punishing things in the literature, the Three Movements from Stravinsky's Pétrouchka. Between those two infernos he sets cooler shadows: Czerny's Variations on a theme of Rode, Debussy's Suite bergamasque (yes, the one with "Clair de lune," worn smooth by a century of use), and Brahms's last quiet utterances, the Op. 119 pieces. Abduraimov's technique is enormous, but he spends it on light and shade rather than on speed. The Melbourne garage lifers have been at it since 2003, and this one simply appeared one morning with no announcement, which turns out to be the right way to receive it. In spirit it's a peace-punk record in the lineage of Crass: "Swimming Hole" takes on environmental rot at the local level, "Ivory Tower" goes after the grip of the one percent, and the band delivers all of it in tight, angular guitar lines and lyrics with no interest in softening the blow. There's no warm-up here, no atmosphere to settle into — the record opens with a fist already swinging, and the wit is sharp enough that you don't mind getting hit. Kevin Richard Martin is best known as The Bug, a man synonymous with sub-bass and discord, which makes the gentleness of Blue Loops all the more disarming. Each of the fourteen pieces began as a single feedback loop, recorded in the downtime after shows, in hotel rooms across Europe, and then hauled back to his Brussels studio and processed within an inch of its life. The result is minimal to the point of vanishing and still emotionally enormous: somewhere between Spacemen 3's tripped-out drones and Thomas Köner's frozen wilderness, with a low end so deep it feels like a cavern. The track titles tell you where he was — "War in My Head," "A Fear of Silence," "Enter Alone, Depart Alone." It is the sound of the void after the lights come up, and, strangely, it is warm. Matt Evans is a New York drummer who builds atmosphere out of percussion, and his first record for AKP is the rare ambient album in which you can hear a person actually moving. Sticks clack against surfaces like rain landing on different materials; squiggly, citric melodies come courtesy of guests including Lia Ohyang Rusli, Nyokabi Kariũki, and the trumpeter Chris Ryan Williams. The whole thing was triggered by visual art, literature, and a certain inwardness, and it never sinks into the usual ambient mattress of held chords. What keeps it alert is the touch behind the kit — the texture of hands deciding things in real time, so that you're aware of both the strikes and the air between them. Serena Pasion, the British-Canadian DJ who records as Peach, spends most of her working life behind the decks at glossy clubs and festivals. Soak Vol. 1, made for Vancouver's reliably celestial Mood Hut, is what happens when she turns the volume of her own genre all the way down. These five pieces live nowhere near a dancefloor; shaped by trips through Asia and some private experiments with physicality, they trade momentum for elastic leads and slow swirls of echo, bubbly and sensual at once. It's club music's other half — the part that plays in the cab home, after the night is over and the body is still humming.
