The Surabaya trio have made a record that sounds like ten people working with ten times the budget. It is their second full-length, and where their 2024 debut Perak leaned comfortably on R&B and disco, this one ventures further into Indonesian tradition without ever turning that move into a thesis or a costume. Natassya Sianturi sings from dead center; the percussion is mixed bright enough to feel hand-played in the room beside you, and the grooves stay unhurried and sweet, closer to Khruangbin's patience than to anything chasing a chart. Two albums in, they already belong in the upper tier of contemporary soul. The "newest" record of the weekend was, in fact, finished in 1994. Tokyo's Noon Disk pressed only 250 copies, and for three decades the album survived as a quietly traded relic of Japanese underground psychedelia—never reissued, never digitized, passed hand to hand among the faithful. Black Editions has now expanded it across two 45s, restoring three previously unheard versions and a long, narcotic reading of Bacharach and David's "The Look of Love." Resist the urge to file it under archaeology: it simply happens to be one of the most absorbing guitar records of the week, arriving thirty years behind schedule. "Post-punk" has been worn nearly to meaninglessness over the past decade, and this Oakland quartet quietly sets about reclaiming what the term was supposed to mean. Six songs: serrated guitar, drums that land like a kick to the ribs, bass with the pulse of a street fight, and cool, ashen, deadpan vocals. They sit somewhere between Total Control's motorik glide and the broken-nosed hardcore of Pyrex—caustic and loud, yet tightly built and held firmly in check, never spilling into mere noise. The Welsh are born to be a little silly, and in this band's hands that is unmistakably a virtue. Built around the duo of Sam Willmett and Tilly Harris and formed in 2016, this is already their fifth studio album—and their third for Sub Pop. The riffs come thick, the lyrics arrive sharp and unruly, the tempos push relentlessly forward, the tongue lodged firmly in cheek from first track to last. It refuses to pose at profundity, and that refusal turns out to be its own kind of discipline: there is not a single dull minute in the bunch. Mark Scott, recording as villagerrr out of Columbus, Ohio, has put out four records in fourteen months; this one, his label debut for Winspear, is also the first he has made as a full five-piece rather than a solitary bedroom project. The sound drifts between slowcore and shoegaze, with strands of plain-spoken folk threaded all the way through. The standing risk in scaling an intimate solo undertaking up into a band is that the whispers harden into slogans, the private turned performative—Scott sidesteps it entirely, leaving every frayed edge and unresolved breath intact. The Californian Olivia Rose Austin calls what she makes "tiptoe music," and this EP does indeed move on tiptoe—stepping with great care around the slow collapse of a relationship, cradled the whole time by her fine-grained electro-acoustic arrangements. It is gentle without ever turning soft, carried by an angular electronic spine that nods openly to Stereolab and Broadcast, those patron saints of the pretty idea with a sharp edge. For anyone who wants quiet that still keeps its corners, it lands precisely in the gap between. Tia Rabinovitz's debut rests on a genuinely productive tension: a soprano sweet almost to the point of excess, with dissonance and intricacy buried just beneath the surface, waiting. On "Candy," a whistling flute hovers over a clipped, declarative delivery; behind "Deep Cut," the guitar wah keeps bubbling up like something half-submerged. Ten songs in thirty minutes, pulling from nineties alternative back toward an older, plainer strain of folk, the confessions taking sudden and unannounced turns as they go. The whole record carries the lingering damp of the Northern California backcountry she grew up in—green, overgrown, and a little haunted.
