Devin Townsend The Moth (Deluxe Edition)

Townsend has been saying for ten years that The Moth would be the work of his life. It is now twenty-four songs across three discs, recorded with the North Netherlands Symphony Orchestra and Choir; the second disc reframes the material as a purely orchestral-choral piece, and the third captures the March 2025 live debut. The metal is here — Townsend is constitutionally incapable of not putting it there — but it functions less as the surface than as the seismic activity underneath. The whole thing is a long, restless meditation on what to do with a life once you've noticed it's finite. It is overblown in exactly the way a project called The Moth has the right to be. The Prog Report noted, with some understatement, that few artists would even attempt this; fewer still would land it. Five years after his last record, McCartney plays nearly every instrument on this one himself — his second one-man-band album in a row — and writes, for the first time in a long time, almost exclusively about the place he came from: post-war Liverpool, a particular pavement, the friend he hitchhiked with to Southampton in 1961, the parents who are now decades dead. The arrangements are simple. The first duet he and Ringo have ever recorded — a song called "Home To Us" — sounds like two old men remembering a kitchen. Rolling Stone, not a publication given to easy hyperbole about late McCartney, called it nostalgic but not soft, and possibly his best record of the century. The Icelandic composer drove out to a cabin that has been in his family for more than half a century — a low building on the edge of a lava field, between two lakes — and recorded a 32-minute album in which there is sometimes more breath than note. Nowhere Sessions is the kind of DG release that the label has been very good at finding lately: small, unaggressive, prepared to be missed. Hallgrímsson trained as a classical guitarist before drifting into film music, and there is something compositional underneath all of it, even as the surface is content to do almost nothing. For his eightieth birthday Buchbinder has avoided every obvious option — the sonatas, the late impromptus, the moments musicaux — and chosen instead the entire body of dances Schubert published in his lifetime. The result, on two discs and a hundred and sixty short tracks, is the strange dignified ghost of an 1820s Viennese ballroom: waltzes, Ländler, ecossaises, the kind of light social music that critics have spent two centuries learning not to underestimate. Buchbinder doesn't sentimentalize. He just lets the slight melancholic shadow that always lives a few millimetres beneath these pieces rise to the surface. This is the forty-fourth Guided By Voices record. The unusual thing about it, according to Robert Pollard, is that he spent more time on the lyrics this time and tried to give the album "an overall emotional feel" — a sentence that, applied to the band that invented the genre of writing-three-LPs-a-year, qualifies as a manifesto. Twelve songs, recorded across distances; the players are tight in a way Guided By Voices have always been tight, which is to say in the way that pretends not to be. After completing the twenty-fifth-anniversary reissue of Endtroducing..... in 2021, Shadow asked himself what the obvious next move was, and the answer was: everything else. The Mo' Wax Singles 1993-1997 gathers all seven of his Mo'Wax-era singles — In/Flux, Lost and Found (S.F.L.), the four-part What Does Your Soul Look Like, Midnight In a Perfect World, Stem, High Noon, and Camel Bobsled Race — across an 8 × 12" box, half-speed remastered at Abbey Road by Miles Showell. About half the audio here is unreleased: alternate mixes, the original master of "High Noon" that Shadow always preferred to the version that came out, and an eighth disc of his first-ever MPC-to-DAT bounces, the literal proofs of concept. He is open in the liner notes that this is a box made for the fan who already cares.
