The Coral 388

The Merseyside band's thirteenth album was first slipped quietly to independent record shops as a small vinyl run — CDs limited to 250 — before streaming caught up. The title is the model number of the Tascam tape machine the record was committed to: an 8-track cassette mixer from 1985, the kind of equipment indie bands abandoned for ProTools sometime around the turn of the century. James Skelly and his brothers have spent the past two decades looking sideways from the Beatles' Liverpool toward Joe Meek, Éthiopiques, and rocksteady; 388 is the first record where you can hear the cassette path on every chord. Park (Death Cab for Cutie, Pedro the Lion, Medium Build) — a Pacific Northwest production lineage with a tolerance for restraint that pop production has mostly forgotten how to perform. Eleven songs, forty-three minutes. The title sets up an obvious echo of 2023's If This Is The End: that one was supposed to be the closing argument, this one is what you do once you discover the courtroom is still in session. Less resurrection than thaw — a Seattle thaw, slow and ambivalent. 第七張錄音室專輯,Andy D. South-African-born, Melbourne-based; second album, nine years after a self-titled debut. Seventeen tracks, recorded in producer Richie Buxton's bedroom — a scale of operation that should produce lo-fi but doesn't. The bedroom isn't an aesthetic here; it's just the room where you can keep the dials in the red until 3 a.m. without anyone telling you to round off the edges. The press release frames it as "subtraction" — a record about removing rather than adding. The title promises a quintet; the record contains, mostly, one person — the Sydney drummer Pike at his kit, organ, synthesisers, electronics, and field recordings, with Ben Lerner's alto saxophone tucked in on three of the seven tracks. "The Shame of Jazz to Come" is a wry inversion of Ornette Coleman's 1959 broadside; the rest of the album borrows vocabulary from jazz, ambient, electronica and post-rock without quite claiming citizenship in any of them. Divers Odd Dog in the Capital

Melbourne's Divers spent three years on the other side of their 2023 Economy Class EP, and the debut LP arrives independent — no Domestic La La label home this time, just Community Music handling distribution. Triple J has been heavy on "The Great Tree" and "Head Chef"; KEXP picked them up early.
