Niamké Désiré made his name in the percussive register; his third Aho Ssan record removes percussion entirely and hands the load to ASIA's violin. The result, recorded after a long trip back to his ancestral Ghana, plays less like a sequel to Rhizomes than a rebuke to its rigor — looser, more pictorial, more interested in the way string overtones can stand in for weather. The album titles ("Sunrise," "100 Suns Pt. I" through IV, "The Children of Noise") trace the trajectory of a sun that, as advertised, eventually turns. The Wovenhand and 16 Horsepower frontman's second solo record extends the surprising direction of 2023's Hyacinth: the Appalachian gothic stays, but everything around it has been wired to a synthesizer and a drum machine. He sings in Latin in places, which sounds preposterous on the page and entirely correct in the headphones. "Hexameter" puts brittle old-timey guitar over churning industrial pulses; "Doubting Zurvan" lets his bass voice settle into a pitch-black synth bed. You feel, more than ever, the figure of a preacher delivering bad news in a barn lit by a single low bulb — only the barn is now a server room. Daniela Weinmann's fourth record as Odd Beholder is a small concept album about wage labor, parasocial economies, and the indignities of being asked to perform legibility. Berlin producer Douglas Greed (techno background, light hands) drapes the songs in '90s electronics — trip-hop, 2-step garage, soft industrial — and Weinmann's smoky contralto stays close to the front. The verbiage is high — "petty-bourgeois surrealism," her PR copy calls it — but the songs do the work: "Internet Famous," "Lean Dreams," "Night Shift." The Swiss artist Sauvageoness moves between idioms inside a single record the way most artists move between songs. A Maze Deep In opens in doom-metal sludge, dissolves into drone, and then catches itself on the spiky bramble of late-'80s indie rock before disappearing into Nine Inch Nails. Jack Shirley (the Atomic Garden lifer who's mixed half of modern post-hardcore) is the through-line — his mastering keeps the album the same shade of black across every detour. "I'm the minotaur in the maze," she says. Pedro Mizutani's record arrives with a thesis in the title — a hug for the living rats — and the playful nerve to back it up. The frame is bossa nova and MPB, but the joints are indie rock, the lyrics are post-grad confessional, and the standout couplet ("This self-esteem of mine / more volatile than cryptocurrency") tells you what kind of bossa we're in now. "Colchão" is a beautifully strummed love song; "Autent: Eterno Retorno" is analog-synth funk. Mizutani sings Eu vou tentar — I'm going to try — and I'd say he did. 裡約樂手給「新 bossa」寫的一份宣言。bossa、samba、MPB 和 indie rock 在他手裡毫不違和——"Dia Azul" 那句「我這副自尊心比加密貨幣還浮動」是這代人語氣的樣本。"Colchão" 簡單到只剩結他和呼吸。專輯名直譯:「新 BOSSA:獻畀仍然喺度嗰啲老鼠嘅擁抱」。這不是懷舊 bossa,係寫畀 2026 年嘅成長痛。

The Toronto/Sydney producer Lavurn Lee has spent the last decade splitting himself: FAKE on Berlin's SUMAC, Cassius Select for UK bass clubs, and now, plainly, Lavurn. The aliases get folded into a single sleeve. Baby It Cold Outside is turn-of-the-millennium music for people who lived through the turn of the millennium — trip-hop with too much treble, alt-rock guitars dipped in cough syrup, dream-pop washes underneath. "Class A Drip" sags beautifully; "Sent" opens with zither plucks.
