Death Kneel — Remembering Well
Max Klebanoff, who otherwise drums for the death metal band Tomb Mold, has spent close to a decade circulating noise releases on Total Black and Chondritic Sound. Remembering Well arrives via his own imprint, Life of Sensation, and Bandcamp Daily gave it Album of the Day on Monday — the kind of editorial nod that doesn't move units but does signal that the Hudson Valley noise scene has the same person in charge of it that it's had for the last ten years, and he's still finding rooms to make uncomfortable. London Chamber Ensemble Quartet, Madeleine Mitchell — Charles Wood: String Quartets
One hundred years after his death, the SOMM label has put out three world premiere recordings of music by Charles Wood — the Irish composer who taught Vaughan Williams and Howells, and whose students have outshone him to such an extent that finding his chamber music in print at all has been, for most of the last century, a project for specialists. The Second Quartet (the "Highgate") and the Fourth ("Harrogate") take their nicknames from the places his family was during their composition: a brother teaching school in north London, a wife taking spa waters in Yorkshire. The Variations on an Irish Folk Tune is what it sounds like. The London Chamber Ensemble's Madeleine Mitchell has built a small career out of recovering work like this, and the playing here makes the case more eloquently than any liner note could. Bruno Råberg — Circulus
The Swedish-born, Boston-based bassist's second album for solo double bass, and his fourteenth as a leader. Fifteen tracks across forty-four minutes, beginning with originals ("Winter Poem," "Banjul Tapestry") and closing on "Like Someone in Love." Råberg has spent decades in proximity to Kris Davis, Donny McCaslin, the late Sam Rivers — players whose vocabulary tends to leak into anyone who stands near them for long enough. What's striking is how little of that leaks back out here.
