The third album from the Leeds-born, London-based saxophonist, and the first she has self-produced (with Matthew Halsall, who runs Gondwana, on co-production duty). Nine compositions, recorded live to tape in five days at The Nave studios in Leeds, with Myra's longtime ensemble augmented by a fifteen-piece string section conducted by Ancient Infinity Orchestra's Ozzy Moysey. The alto saxophone, surprisingly, does not lead; it threads itself through lines Myra wrote for piano, harp, flute, vibraphone, and strings, never overhead but always somewhere inside. Solti's CSO years have a certain mythic finality to them — the muscular, brass-led American sound, the Decca recordings, the legend — and the Barenboim era that followed, from 1991 to 2006, has always sat in a less ceremonial light. This thirty-seven-disc set, gathering everything he recorded with the orchestra for EMI, Erato, and Teldec, is a polite but firm corrective. The live world-premiere of Corigliano's First Symphony (two Grammys); a complete Brahms cycle that, while it will never displace Klemperer or Karajan, finds its own argument; the Beethoven Missa solemnis; a Wagner overtures-and-preludes traversal that feels less like opera-house cosplay than most; concerto recordings with Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma, and Vengerov. Morby's eighth, produced by Aaron Dessner at Long Pond Studio in Stuyvesant, recorded early in 2025 and finished in September. The guest list — Justin Vernon, Lucinda Williams, Amelia Meath, Katie Gavin, Meg Duffy — reads like the credits on a smaller, better-tempered National album, which is, more or less, the impression the record leaves. Rachel Kushner contributed the liner essay; her line about Morby "riding passenger with time" is more useful than any genre tag. Little Wide Open is described as the third in a trilogy with Sundowner (2020) and This Is a Photograph (2022), and it is the loudest of the three, in the sense that the songs accept production rather than hide from it. Dessner has spent five years quietly becoming the Daniel Lanois of the Brooklyn diaspora; this is one of his most successful applications of the technique. The fellow behind Wolf Parade, Sunset Rubdown, and Moonface has been posting piano demos to Patreon for years; twelve of them were re-recorded in a single concentrated week on Gabriola Island, with strings arranged by Maria Grigoryeva and texture work from his neighbor Koop. The titles do most of the introduction the album needs: "Listening to Music in Cars 2.5 (All the Tired Horses)" is exactly the kind of thing only Krug would title, and it is also, somehow, exactly the kind of thing only Krug could make work. Same Fangs is reflective without being sentimental; it touches on marriage and fatherhood and the slow corrosion of friendships and the experience of having opinions about politics in 2026, and finds its way home each time without forcing the resolution. The two Bandcamp-and-Patreon-only bonus tracks, "Cassandra" and "Heart of Diamond," are not throwaways. Five years since the last entry in the series. Matthew Cooper has framed each Virga with a small, specific origin myth: a winter storm that drove him into his garage; a phantasmal pandemic dream; and now, for the third, "minor green spaces, culverts, and other miniature biological ecosystems operating within our daily deluge of cruel rhetoric, unspeakable violence, unending disruption and devastating disparity." That is a long sentence to put on a press release, but it accurately describes the music: eight pieces that breathe more openly than Virga II did without sentimentalizing the breathing. Ambient as a category has been so widely diluted as to mean almost nothing; Eluvium remains one of the artists for whom it still has a working definition. A debut from an Austin quartet whose name is a small commitment to twee in itself. Recorded by Max Deems to one-inch tape between July 2024 and August 2025; mastered by Amy Dragon. Stereogum gave it Album of the Week on May 12, and what is most notable about the record is that K Records — Calvin Johnson's Olympia, Washington imprint, which has signed almost no one in years — co-released it with Perennial. The songs themselves are exactly what the lineage demands: jangling guitars, plain-spoken vocals, a refusal to dress up sincerity in irony. "Vacation" includes the line "I tried / couldn't find out / just how to be graceful," which is also the album's working principle. Nicolas Demuth's sixth album under the moniker, and the most acoustically forward yet — the field recordings were captured in Costa Rica and threaded through the production, which means the percussion is occasionally cicadas and the pads are occasionally birds. The vocal collaborators (Nathan Ball, orbit, CRi, Vraell, Cile, and the under-appreciated cellist Aukai) keep the album from drifting too far into either chillout or downtempo, both of which it sometimes seems on the verge of doing. There is a specific Berlin lineage of organic electronic music — Nils Frahm, Lambert, Apparat-when-he-restrains-himself — and Nacar fits there, with a Latin American twist that earns its presence. A holdover from last Friday, named Bandcamp's Album of the Day on May 12, and included here because hip-hop on this newsletter rarely qualifies under our self-imposed restrictions, and this one does. Black Milk — Curtis Cross, the Detroit producer-rapper who came up in the J Dilla orbit and has been issuing his own records for nearly twenty years now — produced, performed, recorded, mixed, and mastered the album himself at his Stank Babies studio, with live instrumentation from Ian Fink (keys) and Sasha Kashperko (guitar and bass) and a small guest list (Saba, BJ the Chicago Kid, Brandon Myster). The standout is "Crash Test Dummy," which arrives at a hook — "too fast, need to slow down / wish I knew what I know now" — that should be banal and is not.
