She has called this her last record, and the phrasing has the kind of weight that makes you want to take her seriously even when artists frequently change their minds. Twenty-four minutes, nine songs, a seventeen-piece string orchestra in Stockholm with bongos and flutes folded in. The cover image — her face flattened by translucent tights — is more honest than most album art is allowed to be. There's an essential argument inside The Afterparty that the synth-pop carapace Lykke Li has worn since Wounded Rhymes was always provisional, and that what's underneath was orchestral all along. The album is short enough to sit through in one chair without moving. Album four, and the first since the band's giddy 2022 self-titled debut on Saddest Factory established them as the most efficient pop trio of the decade. Naomi McPherson produces; Phoebe Bridgers, who runs the label, A&R'd. The thirteen-song record was written in Los Angeles during a stretch the press notes describe as "political tension and environmental decay" — i.e., the actual conditions of being alive there in early 2026 — and that anxiety is what the record is trying to dance through, not around. "Dancing on the Wall," the title track, is the clearest mission statement they've put on tape: the floor is gone but you keep moving. The third installment of Agnew's chronological Bach project lands at Köthen — the years between 1717 and 1723, when Bach was free of the choral obligations that defined Leipzig and worked instead under a music-loving prince who treated him as a friend. Twenty pieces, an hour and eleven minutes, on harmonia mundi. Two-violin concertos in the Italian manner, a French overture, a concerto grosso. Benjamin Alard handles the harpsichord, and his rapport with Agnew has been the through-line of the series. After two volumes spent in deeper theological waters, this one finds Bach in something close to a holiday mood. It's a useful corrective to the standard image. Three previously unreleased live recordings from 1971 and 1973, when Kempe was the Munich Philharmonic's chief conductor and Strauss was effectively his vocation. Tower Records Japan is the issuing label, hybrid SACD double disc. The Alpine Symphony is the headline, but it's Metamorphosen, the late-Strauss elegy for strings written in 1945 as the world he knew was bombed flat, that justifies the set on its own. Kempe always conducted that piece with a kind of uninflected sorrow that made other readings sound theatrical. The D'Addario brothers' sixth studio record finds them expanded — Reza Matin on drums, Danny Ayala on bass, Eva Chambers of Tchotchke guesting — and the press materials describe an "undercurrent of paranoia and suspicion" running beneath the AM-radio sheen they've built their reputation on. Fourteen tracks. The single "I Just Can't Get Over Losing You" suggested the surface was mostly intact, but the deeper cuts confirm the shift in mood. Captured Tracks pressed it carefully — the CD comes with a twelve-page booklet, which still feels like a defiance. The first Social Distortion album in fifteen years, and the most plainly autobiographical of any record Mike Ness has put his name to. Sessions began in 2023 and were paused when Ness was diagnosed with tonsil cancer; the album exists because he made it through the treatment. Eleven songs, ten written by Ness, the eleventh a cover of Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game" — a choice that says something about the territory the record is mapping. Lucinda Williams sings. Benmont Tench, the former Heartbreaker, plays piano. Epitaph is putting it out, which is itself a small statement about where punk lives in 2026. There Was An Old Woman is her own label. She calls the genre "sci-folk," which is her term for a kind of haunted Americana with light reverb where you'd expect strings. Co-produced by Jamie Johnson; the Jennifer Reeder–directed video for "Barstow" is one of the better music videos of the year so far, and tracks the album's emotional terrain — empty desert, a friend in the passenger seat, the question of who you become when nobody's watching.
