Their first new studio album in nearly a decade, and the temptation to greet it with the standard reunion clichés is exactly the wrong one. Drew is back with David Newfeld, who produced You Forgot It in People; the two men, working again for the first time in twenty years, both lost their mothers during the sessions. That fact threads quietly under the twelve tracks without ever being announced. The Queens quartet's second album, after a 2025 debut that grew out of Eli Frank's bedroom loop project. There is, of course, a wall of distortion, and somewhere inside it the ghosts of My Bloody Valentine and Dinosaur Jr. stand in their familiar positions. What makes this one worth the time is that Bummer Camp seem to have realized that the wall is uninteresting if there isn't a song in front of it. "One Bullet," the lead single, sets up a tense alternation between the urge to disappear and the harder choice to remain, and does it in something close to a power-pop tempo. Bill Wells, longtime collaborator of Aidan Moffat, has done something whose conceptual joke could mask the discipline behind it: he wrote down, in melody, the songs that arrived during his sleep, and recorded twenty-four of them as miniatures, most under two minutes. Side A — Dreams '24 — is sung by Norman Blake, whose voice on a Wells melody sounds less rehearsed than anything on a recent Teenage Fanclub record; he came over for an afternoon and left having recorded ten of them. The New Mexico banjoist's first fully composed solo banjo record, co-produced with Andrew Weathers and tracked in three concentrated days; Weathers later layered in synthesizers, Rhodes, distorted electric guitar, and the kind of subtle structural detours that make a banjo recording feel like a landscape. Thomas Ragsdale, recording as Sulk Rooms, lives on a smallholding in rural Yorkshire, and the field recordings on this record are exactly what you'd expect from someone who cares enough to identify what is making them — earthworms, the small movements of the ecosystem under his allotment, amplified and reshaped against soft synth pads and piano figures. He calls the album, with no irony, a tribute to the dignity of worms. After three or four passes you understand he means it.
