A 202-year-old score finally gets its trio, and Arturo Sandoval hands the reins to his son May 05
Trio Bohémo — Anton Reicha: The Complete Piano Trios
Anton Reicha studied alongside Beethoven in Bonn, taught Berlioz and Liszt at the Paris Conservatoire, and wrote chamber music that essentially no one has bothered to record in full until now. These six piano trios, Op. 101, were first published in 1824; Trio Bohémo's double album — recorded in Vienna with Andrew Keener producing and Oscar Torres mastering, available in Dolby Atmos — is the first modern performance of the complete set. Two hours and thirty-four minutes of music that sits in a liminal space between late Classical form and early Romantic impulse, as though the score itself never decided which era it belonged to. Following their premiere recording of Reicha's piano concertos last year, the Czech ensemble is clearly building something systematic and necessary.
Arturo Sandoval — Sangú
At eighty-three, Arturo Sandoval has made forty-nine studio albums — a fact that could suggest autopilot, except that this one sounds nothing like autopilot. He handed production to his son Arturo III and daughter-in-law Melody Lisman, and what came back is driven by batá drums and Fela Kuti-scaled cyclical grooves rather than the bebop fireworks his reputation was built on. Twelve tracks in forty-two minutes, no filler, with the kind of rhythmic density that rewards repeated listening. NPR ran a feature the day after release calling it his most rooted and most fearless work — a phrase that would sound like hyperbole if the music didn't back it up.
Alejandro Falcón — Falcón in Blue
The inaugural release in Dot Time Records' "Cuban Notes" series, and it sets the tone well. Havana-based pianist Falcón treats danzón, son, rumba, and bolero not as museum pieces but as living, evolving systems — he composed all-original material in these forms for a piano-bass-drums-percussion quartet, recorded last November at Carlitos dBega Studios in Havana with Ted Nash and Roni Ben-Hur guesting from New York. The transparency of the quartet format means every breath is audible; there's nowhere to hide and no reason to. Dot Time 新企劃「Cuban Notes」第一彈。
Yu Su — Foundry
The Chinese-born producer's second album moves to Sheffield's Short Span label and immediately announces its ambitions through the guest list alone: Seefeel, Memotone, and — perhaps most remarkably — Dip in the Pool, the Japanese duo whose work in the late eighties now sounds eerily prescient of everything Yu Su does. Eight tracks of spacious kosmische synths, breathy vocals, and dubby basslines that seem to emanate from a room with no walls. First Floor and Resident Advisor both flagged it immediately; they were right to. Seefeel、Memotone、Dip in the Pool。
Psychobuildings — Tears Vol 1
Peter LaBier's multimedia project returns after six years of silence with seven songs written during the first pandemic year in Brooklyn — isolation, a breakup, the death of a mentor. Selected as a Bandcamp Daily Essential Release this week. The production retains a deliberate roughness, as though smoothing the edges would betray the subject matter. If you've been looking for something with Protomartyr's literary weight but more sonic adventurousness, start here.
SPC ECO — Moments EP
Dean Garcia — formerly of Curve, whose basslines remain some of the most recognizable in nineties British alternative — continues his prolific partnership with daughter Rose Berlin. Five tracks recorded at The Park House in April, already released for Bandcamp Friday. Garcia's low-end processing is still the signature: heavy, blurred, carrying the shadow of 4AD's golden era. Rose's vocals pull everything toward light. The project has long since outgrown any "former member's side project" framing. Dean Garcia(前 Curve)和女兒 Rose Berlin。

Steve Wilson — Enduring Sonance
The alto saxophonist set out to make a ballads album and quickly found the word inadequate. What he was after was a quality of lyricism that makes music resonate regardless of tempo or idiom — what he calls "enduring sonance." Renee Rosnes on piano, Joe Locke on vibes, Jay Anderson on bass, Kendrick Scott on drums, with Kevin Newton of Imani Winds guesting on French horn. The repertoire spans Billy Childs, George Cables, Michel Legrand, and Milton Nascimento — each selection a personal soundtrack to a different chapter of Wilson's life.
