Charles Silver / Hungarian National Philharmonic / Vashegyi — La Belle au bois dormant
Charles Silver (1868–1949) was once the kind of student Massenet pointed at and said: that one. He won the Prix de Rome in 1891. Then nothing — or rather, decades of work that never quite found their century. His opera La Belle au bois dormant, an adaptation of Perrault by way of Henri Cain, has never been recorded until now. Bru Zane sent Vashegyi and the Hungarian National Philharmonic into Béla Bartók National Concert Hall for three days in January 2025 and made the case. Three musicians who should not, on paper, work together: Jaime Fennelly of Mind Over Mirrors, on synthesizers; Nathan Bowles of Pelt and Black Twig Pickers, on banjo and percussion and tape; Joe Westerlund of Califone and Megafaun, on drums, metallophones, zither. Fennelly comes out of the kosmische tradition; Bowles out of Appalachian string music; Westerlund out of the Durham scene that produced Sylvan Esso. The album they made at Drop of Sun Studios in Asheville last winter is a kind of structural joke that turns out to land — Krautrock motorik propulsion grafted to banjo ostinatos and zither drift.
Quiet Light — Blue Angel Sparkling Silver 2
Riya Mahesh's first record under this name, Blue Angel Sparkling Silver, came out in 2023, picked up an unexpected co-sign from Iggy Pop, and earned her a few months of opening slots for Cameron Winter and Chanel Beads. 2 is not a sequel so much as a second pass at the same room. The unifying texture is gauzy synth — that slightly veiled keyboard sound that has become a generational tic, the one Weatherday and Helena Deland and Alex G have all touched at various points. Mahesh's variation is looser, more bedroom-tape; the language is closer to mid-period Bedhead than to current hyperpop, even when the songs technically sit in hyperpop tempo. Kiki Cavazos — Goodbye Blues
Recorded by Sam Doores at his house in New Orleans. The arrangements are stripped back almost to ascesis: acoustic guitar, occasional Telecaster, upright bass, the rare harmony vocal. Ten songs — Goodbye The Crazies, Black Eyed Man, Hawthorne and Heartache, Hobo Song, Cold Mountain Blue, Grey Ghost Train — that traffic in the kind of plain-spoken specificity Townes Van Zandt and Blaze Foley made into a small American genre. Cavazos is not imitating; she's working in the same idiom. A name, a place, an event, a lot of negative space around it. inrain — Rise
Two of the more important figures in early-Nineties dream pop, working together for a few months at Stratford's H.Ark! Studios and then putting the tapes in a drawer for thirty-three years. Rudy Tambala wrote 69 and i with A.R. Kane; Alison Shaw sang on Cranes' Wings of Joy. Music From Memory has dug out the DAT masters, remastered them, added a Tambala-Shaw track recorded in 2012 (Biology) and, on the digital edition, an alternate version of Sleep. Rudy Tambala(A.R. Pure Wrath — Bleak Days Ahead
One-man black metal from West Java. Januaryo Hardy plays everything, has been doing this since 2014, and on the fourth album Bleak Days Ahead he has stopped pretending to honor genre conventions. The five tracks (one of which is in two parts) are ostensibly atmospheric black metal in the Wolves in the Throne Room lineage, but the instrumental palette includes mellotron, organ, piano, saxophone, and at one point throat singing. Six minutes into Bleak Days Ahead Pt. II, the riffs stop, the throat singing arrives, and the saxophone holds a long tone underneath. The album closes with Opaque Mist, whose guitar tone is recognizably shoegaze. 印尼西爪哇一人黑金屬項目。Januaryo Hardy 自己包辦全部樂器,做了 12 年。第四張正規專輯 Bleak Days Ahead 41 分鐘、5 首長曲,氛圍黑金屬路線(Wolves in the Throne Room 一系),但配器加入 mellotron、管風琴、鋼琴、薩克斯,還有喉音。
Chevreuil — Stadium
The French math rock duo formed in 1998, opened for Sonic Youth, made their last record in 2006, and disappeared. Stadium arrives twenty years later as a double album, recorded in January 2025, still committed to the two principles the band always insisted on: live tracking and quadraphonic mixing. The new wrinkle is a custom hybrid guitar Julien Fernandez built that generates electronic textures without recourse to a synthesizer. Eight compositions arranged across four sides in a parallel structure — you can listen to either disc as a self-contained album, or to all four sides as a single arc. 法國 math rock 二人組——Julien Fernandez + Tony Coca-Cola,1998 年成立,跟過 Sonic Youth 巡演開場,2006 年發完最後一張就消失。20 年後迴歸,2025 年 1 月在工作室錄了雙盤。
