Julie Roset / Lawrence Foster / Monte-Carlo Philharmonic — Britten
01 Pick of the Day 今日精選

Julie Roset / Lawrence Foster / Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Britten

Britten's death falls fifty years ago this year, and the catalogue is duly being mined. What separates this disc from the parade of dutiful tributes is a small but telling decision at the center: Julie Roset sings Les Illuminations. The song cycle was written in 1940 for soprano, premiered by Sophie Wyss, then quietly conscripted by tenors over the decades — Pears, then everyone else — until the original allocation became the rarer one. Foster, who has worked with Monte-Carlo for thirty years, simply hands the keys back. Roset, who has spent the last four years collecting prizes (Met Laffont 2022, Operalia 2023, Victoires de la Musique 2025), brings exactly the brightness Britten composed for. The rest of the program — Sinfonia da Requiem, the Gloriana suite, the Young Person's Guide — is solid orchestral Britten without the accompanying special pleading that often clutters anniversary releases. Twenty-eight tracks, sixty-nine minutes, no rehabilitation needed.

Gia Margaret Singing

The title is the news. Margaret released her debut, There's Always Glimmer, in 2018, then sustained a vocal injury that took singing off the table for years. The two records that followed — Mia Gargaret in 2020, Romantic Piano in 2023 — were instrumental, half-circumstance and half-discovery, and they ended up defining her: the synthesizer hush, the slow piano, the willingness to leave space. Singing is her fourth album and her first vocal record in eight years. She recorded it in London with Guy Sigsworth (Frou Frou, Madonna, Imogen Heap), and the guest list — David Bazan, Amy Millan, Kurt Vile, Sean Carey of Bon Iver — sketches the temperature without anyone needing to dominate. Margaret comes back to her own voice not as triumph but as another instrument now available, used with the same restraint she applied to everything else.

Angelo De Augustine Angel in Plainclothes

De Augustine has spent the better part of a decade as Sufjan Stevens's most frequent collaborator and reflective shadow — a softer voice on the harmonies, a steady hand on the acoustic. The fifth album is the first he has written, recorded, arranged, produced, and mixed alone, and yet — characteristically — it is not closed. He invited Oliver Hill to arrange strings, Leng Bian on harp, Wendy Fraser on backing vocals; Thomas Bartlett and Jonathan Wilson co-produced "The Cure." The standout, "Mirror Mirror," is psychedelic country in the precise sense — not theme-park country, not Lana-style cosplay, but the actual genre's strange sub-frequencies. "Empty Shell" is an elegy. Ten tracks, no filler. The headline is not that he stepped out of Sufjan's shadow — he didn't, exactly — but that he is now writing music spacious enough to require strings.

Season 2 Power of Now

Five Melbourne musicians whose résumés (Parsnip, The Stroppies, Phil and the Tiles) read like a footnote to the last decade of Australian indie. Mikey Young — a name that signals quality control to anyone who tracks the scene — handled the master. The band names its own influences without flinching: The Feelies, The Vaselines, The Clean. Power of Now is eleven songs that earn the comparison. The Flying Nun lineage is the cleanest entry point — that drone-and-jangle architecture, the willingness to let a hook repeat itself just past comfort, the fundamental belief that a melody can carry the weight a chorus usually bears. A debut that sounds like its makers have been preparing for it since their previous bands. 墨爾本五個人,履歷讀起來像澳洲過去十年 indie 的腳註——Parsnip、The Stroppies、Phil and the Tiles。Mikey Young(任何追蹤這個圈子的人聽到這名字都會點頭那位 Mikey Young)做的母帶。

Bad Operation Everything Must Go

Ska's reputational problem is largely an inheritance — the third wave of the late nineties did real damage to the genre's credibility by way of horns-and-suspenders kitsch — and any band working in the form now has to decide whether to fight that inheritance or ignore it. Bad Operation, a New Orleans quintet whose debut Brooklyn Vegan ranked among the essential ska records of the past sixty years, fights it explicitly. They call their style "New Tone": Jamaican roots, full horn section, no smirking. Everything Must Go runs ten songs in twenty-six minutes, which is the right length. Most of these songs would have been singles in 1965. None of them ask for permission.

Keelan McGrath The Reel Road

One of two albums Bandcamp Daily flagged as essential this week that you'd otherwise have missed. McGrath is from Tipperary, has multiple All-Ireland championships on the button accordion, and has reached the part of his career where the question is no longer whether he can play the tradition but what he plans to do with it. The Reel Road is his answer: forward-tilted but not affected, technically airtight but not ostentatious, traditional in vocabulary but not in disposition. Players this young rarely sound this confident about declining to be a curator. The recordings are short; the playing is concentrated; nothing here is a demonstration piece.

Grammofon Fabelagtige Forviklinger

A Copenhagen quartet — Niels Olden on sax and clarinet, Jakob Frandsen on guitar, Torben Westergaard on bass, Victor Dybbroe on percussion — whose name translates as "Fabulous Entanglements." Eight tracks, just under thirty minutes; the discipline of brevity is the album's signature. Northern European jazz has a particular kind of restraint, neither cold nor diffident, simply unwilling to crowd a phrase, and Grammofon practices it well. The track titles "Ella" and "Louie" register as quiet acknowledgment rather than explicit homage; the closer, "Moonflow," is where the four players finally arrive in the same room. A jazz album you can play through twice without fatigue, which is rarer than the format usually admits. 哥本哈根四人組——Niels Olden(sax / clarinet)、Jakob Frandsen(guitar)、Torben Westergaard(bass)、Victor Dybbroe(perc)——名字翻成"奇異糾纏"。
