Jorge Mejia / LSO — If These Walls Could Talk
Jorge Mejia keeps a day job running Sony Music Publishing's Latin America division. After hours he writes piano concertos — which sounds like the setup to a joke and isn't, quite. If These Walls Could Talk started life as a 2022 solo-piano piece inspired by 221 Collins, a 1922 Miami Beach apartment building where Mejia once lived. The orchestral version, recorded at Abbey Road with the London Symphony Orchestra, arranges three movements around three invented tenants across three floors and three eras — the summer of 1926, the Second World War, the 1980s. Mejia also wrote three short stories to go with it, one per floor. 今天的 Pick。
Sayaka Shoji / Israel Philharmonic / Zubin Mehta — Works for Violin and Orchestra
The recording is a quarter-century old. Shoji was seventeen when she made it — fresh off her Paganini Competition gold, the first Japanese musician to win. The program is the classical violin virtuoso's debut calling card: Paganini's First Concerto, Chausson's Poème, Waxman's Carmen Fantasy, Milstein's Paganiniana. Metric's tenth. The cover — Emily Haines in a sweat-darkened Sinéad O'Connor T-shirt worn inside out, a loose Cobain-ish cardigan, the album title in duct tape — is the most overt gesture of any Metric sleeve since 2003's Old World Underground. White Denim's thirteenth album is called 13, has thirteen tracks, and drops on Bella Union. James Petralli was born on August 13. The number game is explicit; the music is the opposite — Austin's longest-running shape-shifters still running rock through funk through dub through soul like a single continuous liquid. "(God Created) Lock And Key" was the lead single and does what White Denim leads have always done: a groove that's tighter than it sounds, a guitar part that's looser than it should be. Failure — Location Lost
Failure's seventh since 1994, and possibly their last — Ken Andrews has been careful with his phrasing in interviews but hasn't ruled it out. Nine tracks. The centerpiece is "The Rising Skyline," a largely acoustic breakup song featuring Hayley Williams, who has spent years talking about Failure as a formative band. The Milk Carton Kids — Lost Cause Lover Fool
Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan's seventh — two voices, two nylon-string guitars, nothing else. After 2018's All the Things That I Did and All the Things That I Didn't Do expanded the arrangement palette with strings and horns, Lost Cause Lover Fool is a deliberate retreat to duo form. Chris Andrew — Awakening: Solo Piano Sessions
Chris Andrew is an Edmonton-based pianist whose CV includes Montreal Jazz Fest's TD Grand Jazz Award and tours with Donny McCaslin and Christine Jensen. Black Nile is the LA-based brothers Lawrence and Aaron Shaw, and Indigo Garden is their fourth. Technically released April 10, it makes this list because Bandcamp Daily's April 24 Essential Releases pulled it back into the front window, and because the record's genealogical argument — jazz as process rather than performance, rooted in community rather than the soloist — rewards slow rediscovery.
