The Albanian-Swiss vocalist and the English guitarist began with Balkan folk, then widened to a polyglot book of standards; now they take an unexpected detour through the American canon — an Elizabeth Bishop poem set by Ned Rorem, a piece of Jerome Kern, a touch of Ellington. It should not work. What shifts, against 2022's Come Around, is space. The arrangements are drier, the silences wider. Brian Allen Simon has been making Los Angeles ambient under the Anenon name for fifteen years, and the filed-down trademark is this: a tenor saxophone, long-toned and looped, dissolving into a bed of synthesizers and room noise.
