Frank Tiberi's private recordings from early 1960s New York and Philadelphia clubs capture Coltrane at the hinge point between the sheets and the sheets, with the saxophonist stretching "Giant Steps" across fourteen minutes of exploratory navigation and "Satellite" into a twelve-minute meditation on harmonic space. These recordings have circulated in bootleg form for decades among the kind of collectors who treat provenance the way wine people treat tasting notes—with a mixture of reverence and pedantry. The Coltrane centennial has finally licensed these quarter-century-old tapes to the official archives, and Verve/Impulse! is releasing what amounts to a preview of the fuller mythic archive coming in September. Jieh, the West Coast producer behind HOLODEC, has spent fifteen years assembling field recordings into what can only be called a folk record—though folk in the sense of a documentary practice rather than a musical tradition. The recordings contain the sound of place: wind, voices, the ambient architecture of human activity, the kind of environmental information that gets edited out of most music in the name of clarity. "TRU FOLK" treats these elements as the substance of the music itself, which is either folk documentation or ambient practice depending on which direction you approach it from. Johnny Lynch's sixth album under the Pictish Trail name was written on the Isle of Eigg and recorded in Margate with Mike Lindsay of Tunng and LUMP—a pedigree that suggests pop music made by people who've thought deeply about what happens when folk instrumentation meets electronic processing.
